Money Matters: Money and Your Marriage

Hello Friends...
So many good tips from our upcoming money show. One blog on the subject just doesn't seem to be enough.
One of our guests Burrow Hill spoke about dealing with money issues in your marriage.  He facilitates a seminar called "The Business Side of Marriage."  Burrow suggests that couple leave the house to discuss the issue of money. He says your home is suppose to be your safe haven and there is so much to be tend to...its just not the right place to discuss finances. He suggests you take a walk, go to a hotel, use someones white board at their office...anywhere but home to talk about money.  Burrow says when you go on that walk don't say anything for a minute or two and then open the lines of communication.
A big "aha moment" during the interview was about maintaining separate bank accounts. Burrow suggests there is nothing wrong with having individual accounts and then putting monies together for household expenses. He says you will have less fights about money if you have separate accounts.
When I was married we maintained a joint account and I thought it was weird and "non-trusting" that others would have separate ones. Now that I look back on things, I didn't trust him to not "hold" back money needed for our family. He was more concerned with keeping up with the Joneses at times, instead of our financial welfare. I was just married to the wrong person, it had nothing to do with whether it was right or wrong to have separate accounts.  I now realize that everyone needs something to call their own and as long as we were putting into the joint account, there was nothing wrong with having individual ones as well. Maybe I wanted to save money for a super deluxe spa day and maybe he wanted a new set of golf clubs. No use having to defend your purchases all the time. Of course, that is not all we discussed during the show. So be sure to tune in this Wednesday at 10am Pacific.

How to Save Money....These Days!

Hello Friends..
My wallet is MUCH lighter these days...taking a lot more money to fill up the gas tank and put food on the table. Makes you wonder when some things going to give...
We recently had several wonderful guests on the show with some advice to help you save some money. One in particular talked about shopping and how to keep more moola in your wallet. Kathryn Raaker is one heck of a lady!  The nationally syndicated talk-show host is very savvy, inspirational and REAL!!  She shared these following 10 tips when you are headed out shopping:
1. Don't spend your money buying the Sunday paper and spend your time cutting out coupons!  Kathryn says there are plenty of online services (some for free) where you can find great coupons. Just print them off.
2. The discount store Big Lots has plenty of bargains on quality products. Kathryn says they are even cheaper then Kmart.
3. Kathryn also suggests you look into the shopper reward cards at Best Buy and Staples.
4. End of the year sales are money in the bank for you according to Kathryn.  She says its a great time to get awesome discounts on items..especially big ticket appliances.
5. Check out the outlet stores like Sears and JCPenney for some great bargains.
6. Want to save money on organic produce?  Kathryn suggests checking out delivery services in your area like www.greenbeandelivery.com. Green Bean Delivery offers year-round home delivery of organic, local produce and groceries in select states at an affordable price.
7. Here's another tip. Check out big ticket products in Consumer Reports first!  Make sure that new oven you're looking at is really worth the price, or if you could get something better for your money.
8. If you have a smart phone, download a bar code reader app.  While your at a store checking out the price of an item, you can easily see how much it costs at other stores.
9. Buy your shoes more affordably online. A great website to check out is Zappos.
10. Amway has excellent organic cleaners.  Spend more on a big bottle of cleaner that you can dilute it and use 5-10 times longer than that expensive little bottle of cleaner you bought at the grocery store!
Great tips..I learned so much from this show..you see I took good notes for you and me!  :)
